Nathan was born and raised on a farm in Indiana. He came to faith in Christ during middle school. After high school, he attended Bob Jones University where he earned a bachelor's degree in Information Systems Management. While at Bob Jones University, Nathan and Laura met and were married in 2010. Laura grew up in the home of a church planter/pastor in Hawaii. She earned a bachelor's degree in biblical counseling from Bob Jones. 

While working as a Network Engineer, Nathan became burdened to be better equipped to serve the church and began working on an MA in Biblical Studies. This study program, in connection with regular involvement in the local church, gave him a greater desire to serve the Lord in the local church. The desire to serve in such a capacity came with a need for further preparation. Therefore, Nathan then enrolled at Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary where he earned the Master of Divinity (MDiv) and the Master of Theology (ThM) degrees.

The Paughs have three children: Kalea (11), Kainoa (9), and Makaio (8).
